Mets COO Wilpon Apologizes to Reporter After an embarrassing press conference on Monday that left Mets general manager Omar Minaya looking ridiculous and New York Daily News beat writer Adam Rubin looking shocked, Mets chief operating officer Jeff Wilpon publicly apologized to Rubin.

"After some reflection, I thought it was important to come out and talk to everybody. We're very sorry about what happened [Monday]," Wilpon said before Tuesday's game against Colorado. "It was the wrong forum. The wrong time. The wrong situation for Omar to express himself in that way."

Though Minaya was unavailable for comment, Wilpon did say that Minaya felt sorry for using such a forum to criticize Rubin.

"It's taken a toll on him in a very big way. He's feeling the effects
of what he did. … I think he really understands he made a very large
mistake. He's apologized to ownership. He's apologized to a bunch of
the staff. He understands he's put us in a bad spot here."

Wilpon also made it clear that the Mets are not going to remove Minaya from his position as the club's general manager.

"Right now the idea is Omar is our general manager, period," Wilpon
said. "If you guys can give him a day or so I think he'll be back to [being] Omar. If we can all give him a chance, I think he'll come back
and make this organization proud. … Omar is our general manager, and
he's going to be our general manager."
