The trade winds continued blowing on Wednesday afternoon, as San Francisco — which has insisted it intends to acquire some major help on offense — picked up Freddy Sanchez from Pittsburgh in exchange for pitching prospect Tim Alderson.

The three-time All-Star will certainly be a boon for the Giants' offense, which checks in at 15th in the league. He won the NL batting title in 2006 and is currently hitting .296 with six homers and 34 RBIs.

The 31-year-old second baseman had his knee examined twice this week by San Francisco's medical staff, and although he is currently categorized as day-to-day, the Giants went ahead with the deal.

The Giants acquired Cleveland's Ryan Garko on Friday, and they continue to seek offensive firepower as they prepare to make a push for the playoffs. As of Wednesday afternoon, they were tied with the Rockies for first place in the NL wild-card race and were eight games behind the division-leading Dodgers.

Alderson, who was selected with the Giants' 22nd overeall pick in the 2007 MLB draft, was ranked by Baseball America as the Giants' fourth-best prospect entering the 2009 season.

Sanchez is the seventh player to be traded by Pittsburgh this year, joining the likes of Nate McLouth, Nyjer Morgan, Adam LaRoche, Eric Hinske, Jack Wilson and Ian Snell, the latter two being sent to Seattle in a seven-player trade on Wednesday.
