Lugo Designated for Assignment

Lugo Julio Lugo's time in Boston appears over.

According to multiple reports, the Red Sox are set to designate Lugo for assignment before Friday's game against the Blue Jays.

FoxSports.com first made the report, while Lugo's agent, Sam Levinson, confirmed the report to the Boston Globe.

“When you see a good-looking girl, you get married, and sometimes, things don’t work out,” Lugo told Steve Buckley of the Boston Herald. “I gave it my best, and unfortunately, things didn’t work out. This is the best for both parties. I wanted it to work out but it didn’t.

“I wanted to play," he added. "I wanted to play good. I wanted to play right here with the Red Sox. I’m not happy that that didn’t happen, but when things don’t work out, it’s best to move on.”

The move means the Red Sox have 10 days to try to trade the shortstop. If not, the team will likely release him and be forced to pay the roughly $13 million left on his contract.

According to Fox Sports, the Red Sox could be willing to make that payment as part of a trade.

With Clay Buchholz getting the call on Friday night and Mike Lowell and Jed Lowrie expected to join the team this weekend, the move opens roster space. Aaron Bates will likely be sent down to Pawtucket, with Buchholz following him after Friday's game.

After starting the season on the disabled list, Lugo appeared in 37 games for the Sox this season, compiling a .284 batting average and .352 on-base percentage. In short time in the field, Lugo made seven errors and owns a .928 fielding percentage.
