The Red Sox have been open from the start about their plans for John Smoltz. At 42 years old, Smoltz was acquired with the postseason in mind.

Through four starts, Smoltz has been mostly average. While his start on Monday won't win or lose a World Series, it could have some serious implications on the roster.

Team executives will be watching Smoltz's start in Texas closely on Monday to determine plans heading into the trade deadline, according to Joel Sherman of the New York Post.

Smoltz, who is matched up against former teammate Kevin Millwood, is coming off a five-inning, seven-strikeout win over the Royals. His record stands at 1-2 with a 5.40 ERA.

Sherman also claims that "privately team officials believe [Clay] Buchholz will end up making a lot of starts in the second half due to the age realities of pitchers such as Smoltz and Tim Wakefield or injuries."
