With Sergio Mitre currently occupying the No. 5 spot in the rotation, the Yankees are in the market for a starting pitcher.

And the word on Thursday was that they soon will be scouting a two-time All-Star to potentially fill the void. No, it's not Roy Halladay. Or even Cliff Lee.

Instead, the Yankees will be taking a look at Justin Duchscherer of the Oakland Athletics as he tosses a two-inning or 30-pitch rehab start on Sunday, according to ESPN's Buster Olney (subscription required). Duchscherer has not pitched yet this year while recovering from right elbow surgery, but he did throw a successful 20-pitch simulated game on Tuesday.

"He did well," manager Bob Geren told the Athletics' official Web site. "He said
he felt great."

The Yankees could use Duchscherer, 31, either in the rotation or out of the bullpen, as he's made the All-Star team in both roles — in 2005 as a reliever and in 2008 as a starter.

Last year, "The Duke" went 10-8 with a 2.54 ERA and 1.00 WHIP in 22 starts for Oakland. Over the course of his seven-year career, he's compiled a 3.14 ERA and 1.12 WHIP in 219 games (27 starts).

The Milwaukee Brewers, who own a 4.54 team ERA, are also expected to be scouting the righty on Sunday.
