Bruins Rank Third in Yahoo’s Power Rankings

Things are going to be different this October for the Bruins.

Last year, the team opened the season coming off an eighth-place finish in the conference. They had shown some fight in a seven-game series against the Canadiens, but nevertheless were eliminated in the first round.

When the B's took the ice to start the season in Colorado, not many people believed they had a legitimate shot at the Cup.

This year, they'll have a few more eyes watching them when the puck drops on Oct. 1.

The change is already evident in Yahoo's NHL power rankings, which places the Bruins at third.

The list credits the B's with re-signing Tim Thomas, David Krejci and Mark Recchi as well as adding Derek Morris and Steve Begin.

The top-ranked team is the defending Cup champion Pittsburgh Penguins. The Blackhawks, who were eliminated in the Western Conference finals, are ranked second.

Despite making the Stanley Cup Finals last season, the Red Wings are ranked sixth, due to "more departures than arrivals."

The Carolina Hurricanes, who eliminated the Bruins in Game 7 of the Eastern Conference semifinals, are ranked 13th, while the Canadiens, coming off a disappointing season, are ranked 16th.

Take the list for what it's worth, though — it did say the Bruins added Shane Hnidy this offseason.
