Shortstop Alex Gonzalez is headed back to Boston. The Red Sox and Reds completed a trade on Friday that will bring the former Red Sox shortstop back to solidify the club's middle infield.

Known for his defensive skills, Gonzalez is not expected to join the Red Sox until Saturday in Texas. His addition to the roster will most likely result in the release of infielder Chris Woodward.

According to WEEI.com, the Red Sox sent 23-year old Single-A shortstop Kris Negron to the Reds in exchange for Gonzalez.

Gonzalez signed with the Red Sox as a free agent in 2006 and played one season in Boston. In 111 games, he hit .255 with 16 home runs and 55 RBIs. In two seasons with the Reds, Gonzalez hit .248 with 19 home runs and 81 RBIs in 178 games.

Gonzalez holds a $6 million club option in his contract for next season, so the Red Sox could exercise that option and retain him for 2010.
