The Celtics seem to have gotten a lot better in the offseason.
Unfortunately, the Cavaliers are following suit — and they're picking up the pieces Boston is leaving behind.
According to the Cleveland Plain Dealer, the Cavs are closing in on a two-year deal with former Celtic Leon Powe. The report indicates that Powe is supposed to meet with Cleveland team doctors on Tuesday to evaluate his progress from a torn ACL, sustained in the first round of the 2008-09 playoffs. Powe is not expected to return to the court until the All-Star break.
The deal could be made official as early as Tuesday.
The Celtics, who drafted Powe in the first round of the 2006 draft, did not make him a qualifying offer this offseason — but the Plain Dealer reports that the Celtics had hoped to pick him up once he got healthy again.
The 25-year-old Cal product played in 70 games for Boston in 2008-09, averaging 7.7 points and 4.9 rebounds in 17.5 minutes per game. He helped the Celtics earn their 17th title in 2007-08.
