Flags were flying all over the field during the first week of NFL play on Sunday, as officials have made it known they will do everything in their power to protect quarterbacks this season. And Patriots linebacker Adalius Thomas' wallet took a hit as a result of the hit he landed on Bills quarterback Trent Edwards in Week 1.

Thomas got a letter from the NFL on Friday, charging him a fine of $5,000 for the roughing-the-passer penalty he received on Monday in the Patriots' win against the Bills, The Boston Globe reports.

Thomas was called for the penalty in the fourth quarter after he sacked Edwards. The NFL ruled that Thomas unnecessarily and violently slammed Edwards to the ground.

"It is what it is," Thomas told the Globe. "I'll appeal it and just go from there. I don't know, either you got to have a fast whistle, or the guy is going to get taken to the ground. I didn't think I slammed him to the ground, nothing like that. Right before I got ready to swing him down or whatever, or tackle him, my feet are off the ground, and I'm on his back kind of. You don't really know what to do. You're stuck between a rock and a hard place. Do you let the guy go and let him throw the ball? He is a tough guy then."
