It was a good sign for the Patriots' defense on Monday when second-year linebacker Jerod Mayo was spotted walking through the locker room without crutches, projo.com reports.

Mayo was carrying a brace and "politely declined" the opportunity to speak with a reporter, according to the report.

After being named the NFL's Defensive Rookie of the Year, Mayo was expected to anchor the defense in just his second year. He recorded 128 tackles last season before making one in the season opener this year against the Bills. He left the game after just 8:45 with an unspecified leg injury. The team didn't release an official diagnosis, but several reports claimed it was a sprained MCL.
