Job Security a Welcome Change for Patriots’ Guyton

FOXBOROUGH, Mass. — In all likelihood, this week was a little more stressful for Gary Guyton one year ago.

With roster cuts looming — all teams must be down to 53 players by Saturday — Guyton’s spot is secure with the New England Patriots. As an undrafted free agent last year, though, the rookie linebacker was playing the numbers game like anyone else in his position.

An undrafted free agent’s chances to make a team are already slim enough. Not only did Guyton do that, but he became an impact player off the bench as a rookie. Now, he’s the guy who could be most heavily relied upon to fill the void of retired linebacker Tedy Bruschi.

“I have definitely learned a lot from last year to now,” Guyton said. “I look back now at the knowledge I have acquired over the time. I’ve learned a lot about football since then.”

Before anyone, Guyton credits Bruschi for his ability to come such a long way over a short period of time. With Bruschi out of the picture, Guyton will likely earn the majority of reps alongside middle linebacker Jerod Mayo in 3-4 defenses, and he’ll play in sub packages in the 4-3.

“Well, anything is possible,” Guyton said. “I just came in here with the mentality to work hard and be the best I can. Everything else will work itself out."
