The Red Sox announced the signing of Cuban shortstop Jose Iglesias to a major league contract on Tuesday.
The 19-year-old defensive whiz, who signed for four years and $8.25 million beginning in 2010, has drawn comparisons to Ozzie Smith and other Gold Glove shortstops.
Iglesias will play for the Mesa Solar Sox in the Arizona Fall League starting this October. The 5-foot-11, 175-pounder played in 75 games for los Vaqueros de La Habana of Cuba’s major league Serie Nacional in the 2007-08 season, batting .322 (101-for-314) with 39 RBIs and 51 runs scored to go with 11 doubles. The right-handed native of Cuba established residency in the Dominican Republic before signing with the Red Sox.
