Report: Jerod Mayo Says Injury Is 'Nothing Serious' The Patriots may have beaten the Bills in Monday night's opener, but it's fairly obvious that the team won't be able to go very far without Jerod Mayo.

According to the linebacker, however, the team may not need to find out what life is like without him.

Mayo left the game in the first quarter with a right leg injury when Gary Guyton stepped on his ankle. It was unclear on replay what exactly happened, though the 23-year-old was clutching his knee on the ground. According to a report by Ian Rappaport in the Boston Herald, Mayo told a teammate at halftime that "it's nothing serious". That player also told Rappaport that Mayo was in "good spirits" during the break.

In the least surprising event of the evening, head coach Bill Belichick offered no details on the injury, and only a fool would expect anything more in the coming days. But if Mayo is to be taken at his word, chances are he could be back as soon as Sunday, when the Pats travel to the Meadowlands to take on the Jets.
