Celtics Looking to 'Add Some Lettering' This SeasonMotivation comes in many forms.

For the 2009-10 Boston Celtics, it comes in the form of a blank white canvas.

Hanging in the Celtics’ gym next to the 2008 world championship banner is a similar one with no words on it.

The idea is to remind the Celtics what they’re working toward, though nobody at the team’s media day was willing to accept responsibility for putting it there.

“I don’t know where that came from, so it’s just there,” said head coach Doc Rivers. “Red [Auerbach] did it. Red. Yeah, blame it on Red.”

Ray Allen explained what the banner meant.

“The ’08 banner … we had the light shining on that spot, so we always knew what we were playing for,” he said. “Every day when we walk into the gym, that’s what we’re going to see up there. So we want to put some more lettering on that banner.”

Though the rafters at the Garden are already a bit crowded, chances are the Celtics would find a way to make some room for the new banner.
