Celtics, Rajon Rondo Receive More Time to Talk as NBA Extends Deadline The National Basketball Association is giving the Celtics — along with the rest of the league — a much-needed overtime to sign on any loose ends from the 2006 draft class.

The league has pushed back the deadline for contract extensions for all players from the 2006 draft from Saturday to Monday, league spokesman Tim Frank confirmed Thursday, according to ESPN.com. This means that the Celtics will have extra time to work out a deal with guard Rajon Rondo, who will enter the 2010 free agent class should he not agree to return to Boston.

WEEI reported that Rondo was offered a five-year, $45 million extension earlier this week but the guard is apparently seeking a five-year deal worth between $55 million and $60 million.

Other big names from the 2006 draft that have not been able to sign an extension are former UConn standout and current Memphis forward Rudy Gay and Chicago’s Tyrus Thomas, whom the Celtics meet Friday night in Boston.
