Savard is expected to miss four to six weeks — the same amount of time forward Milan Lucic is expected to be out with a broken finger.
The Bruins recalled forward Trent Whitfield from Providence on an emergency basis.
Savard has led the Bruins in scoring each of the last three years and currently leads the team in scoring this year, with four assists and three goals in seven games. Last year, Savard didn't miss a game, and he's averaged 80 games in the past four seasons.
Whitfield, 32, has played in six games for Providence this season and has registered three goals and five assists. In his career, Whitfield has appeared in 177 NHL games with the Capitals, Rangers and Blues and registered 11 goals and 17 assists.
Whitfield becomes the newest member of a team already adjusting to a myriad of fresh faces. The team acquired forward Daniel Paielle from the Sabres on Tuesday after recalling Vladimir Sobotka and Brad Marchand from Providence. The team traded away forward Chuck Kobasew on Sunday.
The Bruins are 3-4-0 and sit in third place in the Northeast Division and ninth place in the Eastern Conference.
Savard's injury was previously unknown by the media, and the team did not specify when the injury occurred.
