The Brewers claimed catcher George Kottaras off waivers from the Boston Red Sox Wednesday.

The 26-year-old batted .237 with one homer and 10 RBIs in 45 games with the Red Sox last season which was cut short due to a lower back injury and the acquisition of Victor Martinez.

The Brewers currently have another young catcher, right-handed hitting Jonathan Lucroy, who is expected to be in the majors in 2010. General manager Bob Melvin has notified veteran backstop Jason Kendall that the club won't be matching his $5 million 2009 salary, meaning Kottaras and Lucroy could platoon behind the dish next summer as the team currently doesn't have a No. 1 catcher.

Kottaras was waived Wednesday morning.
