Bruins Need to Find a Way to Rebound, Despite Key Injuries

James Murphy The Bruins have been a one-trick pony this season, and the trick hasn't been a good one.

It's been win one, lose one for the Black and Gold all season long, but hopefully things will change when they visit Motown to face the Red Wings on Tuesday night.

Of course, if the Bruins are looking for an excuse for their lack of offense, here's an easy one: Marc Savard, last year's leading scorer, and bruiser Milan Lucic are both on injured reserve and should be out another 4-5 weeks.

Are the injuries finally catching up to them?

"You knew they were," said NESN.com's James Murphy on Monday's edition of SportsDesk. "They knew they were going to be fighting for goals and fighting for points without them in the lineup -- especially without Savard and his playmaking skills -- and I think they miss Lucic's physicality up front, too. I think a lot of guys benefit from having his size out there and the space he creates. They really need to get those guys back as soon as they can."

Another disappointment for B's fans has been the lack of production from defenseman Dennis Wideman -- who has been playing hurt for much of this season, according to Murphy. But in his stead, a new defensive star has emerged: newcomer Derek Morris, who is currently second on the team in points.

"He's been huge," Murphy said, "and he's fit in in the dressing room as well. He's great with the media, he's great with the players and the fans, and on the ice, he's been great."
