On Thursday, Dec. 10, and Friday, Dec. 11, the Red Sox will take a break from the Hot Stove season to bring some warmth and cheer to children's hospitals around the Boston area as part of the 2009 Holiday Caravan.
The Red Sox participating in the event include pitchers Michael Bowden and Manny Delcarmen, hitting coach Dave Magadan and first-base coach Ron Johnson, as well as Wally the Green Monster and other front office personnel.
The Caravan will begin at 10 a.m. on Thursday, as the group pays an hour-long visit to Children's Hospital Boston, one of the nation's largest and most highly rated hospitals for pediatric care. They will next visit the Dana Farber Cancer Institute from 11:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m., meeting with young cancer patients and maintaining the team's relationship with The Jimmy Fund, which is now in its 56th year. From 1:30 p.m. to 2:30 p.m. the Caravan will be at the Franciscan Hospital for Children, one of the the largest pediatric rehabilitation facilities in the country.
On Friday, a visit to Mass General Hospital for Children is first on the schedule at 10 a.m. to 11 a.m, followed by the Shriners Hospital for Children — Boston from 11:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. The Caravan continues with a trip to Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center, the official hospital of the Boston Red Sox, from 1 p.m. to 2 p.m, including a visit with a trauma unit.
The final stop for the Caravan will be at the Red Sox Scholars Holiday Party at the State Street Pavilion at Fenway Park from 6:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. The Red Sox Scholars program is sponsored by Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center, is in its seventh year providing college scholarships, tutoring, summer camps, and other leadership development activities to 175 students in Boston's public schools.
All stops on the Caravan are closed to the general public.
