Mark Herzlich: Being Back on Football Field Feels 'Awesome'
Just nine months after being diagnosed with cancer, BC linebacker Mark Herzlich is back in action -- and by the looks of things, he hasn't missed a beat.
"I'm strong, my leg's feeling good, I'm getting loose and better every day," Herzlich told NESN's Jayme Parker during Tuesday's practice.
Now that Herzlich's cancer treatments are finished and he is getting his strength -- and his hair -- back, he's finally starting to feel like he's getting back to normal again.
"It's funny, my eyebrows and mustache came back first, so I looked like a cartoon character for like two weeks and then the rest of it started filling in," Herzlich joked. "It makes everything feel a little more normal. I'm getting back to my old self -- I'm playing football again, I got my hair back."
The 2008 ACC Defensive Player of the Year is practicing with his teammates once again and hopes to return to the Eagles as soon as possible -- as a player instead of as an honorary coach. Despite the fact that he only recently finished chemotherapy and radiation, Herzlich is confident that he is close to a return.
"Upper-body-strength-wise, I can probably go against any [of my teammates]," Herzlich said. "Leg-wise, I'm not where I need to be, to be honest. It's going to take a lot of work in the upcoming months and I have confidence I'm going to get back to normal, but for right now, it's just [about] getting flexible and getting strong."
