Terry Francona Calls Mike Lowell Situation a 'Tough Decision' It may be the offseason for Red Sox fans, but Terry Francona and his coaching staff are already in the full swing of things.

With pitchers and catchers set to report in a month, there’s plenty of work to be done for the skipper — and given how abruptly the 2009 campaign ended, he’s probably extra eager to get back to work.

The manager took some time on Wednesday to speak with NESN’s Heidi Watney, touching on the additions of Adrian Beltre and Mike Cameron, the shifting of Jacoby Ellsbury to left field and the Mike Lowell situation.

Heidi asked Francona about Lowell, who’s obviously a fan favorite, and what his future holds.

“I’ve [talked with Lowell] a few times,” Francona said. “Mikey should be a fan favorite. He’s earned that. We make very tough decisions, and they’re not always applauded by everybody and the players don’t always agree. We make mistakes, but we do what we think is right, and we do the best we can, and that’s what we’ll continue to do.”

A good answer to a good question from the manager — just don’t ask him about hockey.
