Marc Savard's Mother: 'I Really Thought He Was Dead' Watching Matt Cooke's hit on Marc Savard was difficult for anyone to watch, but nobody had a tougher time watching Savard hit the ice than his mother.

"I was watching the game at my parents' house and I saw a man lying on the ice and I said, 'Mom, that's Marc, I can tell by his skates,' and I totally lost it," Rollande Savard told The Vancouver Sun. "It's just so hard to see that. I really thought he was dead and I saw the stretcher come out."

Not surprisingly, Rollande Savard was irate that Cooke was not punished for the hit.

"If I would have been [on the ice], I would have hit him myself," she said. "[Cooke] tried to take Marc out. He should be out. That kid shouldn’t be playing. He should be penalized. We all know it shouldn’t be allowed in the game and we hear this stuff about new rules taking effect next year. That’s bull. Do something now.

"That guy [Cooke] is laughing at everyone. My son could be out forever. Who knows?"

NHL disciplinarian Colin Campbell, the man who made the decision not to punish Cooke with a suspension or fine, said that he does care what Savard's mother thinks but that he "couldn't find a way" to enforce punishment on the hit.

"If we can ever find a slice of a factor, we don’t give repeat offenders a
break," he told the newspaper. "We're going by consistent precedents. At the end of the day, we have to follow the rules"
