Merrimack's Stephane Da Costa Clearly the Cream of the Crop Among Hockey East Rookies

Stephane Da Costa Merrimack's Stephane Da Costa has recorded 44 points with the Merrimack College men's hockey team this season, showing why he's the cream of the crop among Hockey East rookies.

Da Costa, a native of Paris, France, didn't draw much attention from scouts at major universities, but their loss has become Merrimack's gain. Merrimack coach Mark Dennehy immediately took notice the first time he saw Da Costa.

"I just remember saying 'Who's number 24?'" Dennehy told NESN's Kathryn Tappen. "I don't know if he'd actually seen Merrimack College until he arrived this September."

Da Costa has played impressive hockey this season. His most memorable performance came in just his second collegiate game when he scored a school-record five goals.

"It was like a dream," DaCosta said. "At the end of the game, I just couldn't believe it."

The five-time Hockey East Rookie of the Month's teammates have taken notice as well.

"He's incredible," Merrimack junior Chris Barton said. "He's smart. He works hard and I think a lot of the guys on the team look up to him."
