The Red Sox released reliever Brian Shouse on Friday in a move which tightens the race for the final bullpen spots with the team.

Shouse, 41, was signed as a minor league free agent Jan. 4 and was in the mix to give the club another lefty out of the bullpen. He was 1-0 with a 0.96 ERA in 10 Grapefruit League games but did not quite fit into the plans for the bullpen going forward, according to manager Terry Francona.

“He’ll pitch in the major leagues this year,” Francona said.

Shouse was seen shaking hands and packing his bags early Friday morning in the clubhouse at City of Palms Park.

His release comes about a week after the Sox signed veteran lefty Alan Embree to a minor league deal after sending a scout to his Oregon home to watch him throw.

Shouse is 13-10 with a 3.72 ERA in 467 career relief appearances with six teams. He pitched in seven games for Boston in 1998.
