Red Sox outfield prospect Ryan Westmoreland has been moved out of the intensive care unit after brain surgery earlier this week to remove a cavernous malformation.

The encouraging news was announced by the team three days after the 19-year-old Rhode Island native had the procedure at the Barrow Neurological Institute in Phoenix, Ariz.

Westmoreland is now in the hospital's Neuro Rehabilitation Unit, where he will undergo physical and occupational therapy, according to Red Sox officials.

"Ryan is right on track and we expect progressive improvement," said renowned surgeon Dr. Robert Spetzler, who performed the operation.

The Red Sox, who helped guide Westmoreland to the finest care possible after the condition was diagnosed earlier this month, have been happy to receive good news along the way.

"We are thrilled for Ryan and his family that the surgery went so well,” said general manager Theo Epstein. "While we recognize that the recovery process is long and complicated, we are excited that all of the early indications are so positive. On behalf of the Westmoreland family, we thank everybody who has expressed concern and support for Ryan."
