Red Sox Nation Offers Mike Lowell a Hero's Welcome During Pregame CeremoniesWas Sunday night's standing ovation for Mike Lowell another example of Red Sox Nation's devotion to one of the game's "good guys" or was it simply a perfect opportunity to give Lowell an early yet proper send-off?

Fenway Park exploded in applause when public address announcer Carl Beane introduced the (reserve) infielder as part of the pregame lineup announcements.

The club attempted to deal the veteran slugger in the offseason, and in this business, no player is safe — especially a $12 million bench player who is itching to return to a starting role.

"It meant a lot,” Lowell told the Boston Herald of the ovation. "I think that’s the ultimate sign of respect, when the fans cheer for you. I felt it was very special. I enjoyed it a lot."
