Red Sox minor league outfielder Ryan Westmoreland was released from Spaulding Rehabilitation Hospital over the weekend, according to team officials who made the announcement Tuesday on his 20th birthday.

It is the latest round of encouraging news regarding Westmoreland, who underwent surgery in mid-March to remove a cavernous malformation in his brain. According to Red Sox officials, Westmoreland left Spaulding on Saturday and will continue to undergo physical and occupational therapy as an outpatient.

The club said that Westmoreland "has been making steady progress and is in great spirits." He has been seen smiling with friends at two Red Sox games at Fenway Park this season.

Considered by many to be the top positional prospect in the system, Westmoreland had some wisdom teeth removed in early March as he was wrestling with headaches and other issues. When the symptoms did not go away, he was sent to be examined at Massachusetts General Hospital, where the malformation was discovered.

He was diagnosed March 5 and flew to the Barrow Neurological Institute in Arizona, where he underwent surgery March 16.

A Rhode Island native who was taken in the fifth round of the 2008 draft, Westmoreland hit .296 with seven home runs in 60 games at Lowell in 2009. His season was cut short when he broke a collarbone running into an outfield wall.
