Ivonne Hernandez was convicted of vehicular homicide in December for running down and killing 29-year-old Matthew Beaudoin with her car on May 2, 2008, following claims that Beaudoin and others harassed her because of a Yankees sticker on her car. On Tuesday, she found out her punishment.
According to the Nashua Telegraph, Hernandez received 20 to 40 years for second-degree murder and 3 1/2 to 7 years for second-degree assault and reckless conduct. Judge Robert Lynn issued the verdict and will allow Hernandez to serve both sentences simultaneously.
"I'm satisfied, Ms. Hernandez, that you're not an evil person," Lynn said in court. "On the other hand, it's clear to me you have not accepted full responsibility for this. There's really no question in my mind about that."
Police arrested Hernandez after she hit Beaudoin and Maria Hughes with her car after leaving The 603 Lounge in Nashua, N.H. Hughes suffered a minor knee injury, but Beaudoin died one day later because of head trauma caused by injuries to his skull.
The case went to trial last year, and after 10 days of testimony, a jury found Hernandez guilty of vehicular homicide.
Hernandez, 45, was ordered to pay the Beaudoin family for medical and funeral expenses totaling more than $60,000, and nearly $10,000 to the state's victim compensation fund. In addition, Hernandez will receive alcohol and anger management counseling and will take a victim impact course while in prison.
