And there’s little doubt that each guy on the roster played a part.
Rajon Rondo, who elicited “MVP” chants from the Garden crowd Friday night, shoved his way into the ranks of Best Point Guards in the league throughout this postseason, averaging 17 points, 10 assists, 5.3 boards and two steals per game to this point.
And who could forget the highlight-reel performance in Game 3 against Orlando, when the Little Engine That Could stole the ball from between Jason Williams’ legs and scooped in a layup? It was the defining moment of the series, and no doubt the play that set the tone for a 3-0 edge that ultimately proved too hard to overcome.
The Captain, Paul Pierce, lit up the Magic on Friday in perhaps the most important game of the playoffs thus far (Let’s face it: That was Boston’s Game 7), dropping 31 points to complement 13 rebounds, five assists and two steals. He played 45 minutes in that clinching game. It was like watching The Truth 2.0.
That said, would the Celtics have even been in the conference finals without Kevin Garnett? KG missed the postseason last year, and the C’s were ousted in the semis — by Orlando. What a difference a Big Ticket makes.
And, of course, there’s Ray Ray. The league’s greatest outside threat has hit 44 treys thus far this playoffs. Without Ray Allen’s ability to spread the defense and an outstanding job covering LBJ, the Celtics might already be on the beach sipping mai tai’s.
It’s not easy, in other words, to name one Celtic as the most valuable. But we’re asking you to try.
