FOXBORO, Mass. — Patriots defensive lineman Vince Wilfork grew up in Florida as a Boston Celtics fan, and he's excited for the opportunity to watch his favorite NBA team win a second title during his tenure in New England.

"I'm a huge Celtics fan, and I'm rooting for those guys," Wilfork said on Wednesday. "I think they have a shot. They're in the big dance, and good luck to them."

Wilfork gets to the Garden as often as possible when he's in town, and he sat courtside during the Celtics' Eastern Conference finals series win against the Magic. Wilfork was old enough to remember the tail end of the careers of the original Big Three, and the C's emerged as his favorite team ahead of the upstart Orlando Magic and Miami Heat.

"I grew up a Boston Celtics fan, watching Larry Bird and those guys, Kevin McHale, 'Chief' [Robert Parish]," Wilfork said. "I watched it. I grew up and just loved the Green."

The Celtics and Lakers meet in the Finals for the 12th time in their history, with Game 1 on Thursday night in Los Angeles. Wilfork had one message to relay to Paul Pierce and the rest of the gang.

"Good luck to them," Wilfork said. "I'm pretty sure Doc [Rivers] will have those guys ready to roll."
