Veteran minor league outfielder Jonathan Van Every has been traded by the Red Sox to the Pirates in exchange for infielder Josue Peley. The story was first reported by MLB.com's Jenifer Langosh via Twitter, with the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette later reporting that Van Every was in the lineup for the Indianapolis Indians on Monday night.

Peley, 22, is a native of Venezuela and will add depth to the Red Sox' catching prospects, joining Tirple-A Pawtucket's Mark Wagner, Double-A Portland's Luis Exposito and Single-A Salem's Tim Federowicz. In 19 games for Single-A West Virginia this season, Peley batted just .179 with four doubles and six RBIs. Defensively, he's posted a .992 fielding percentage while gunning down 38 percent of stolen-base attempts.

Van Every, 30, has filled in for the Red Sox over the past three seasons, hitting .255 with two homers in 47 at-bats. He also pitched in — literally — when the team ran out of arms, twice appearing as a relief pitcher. Van Every signed with the Pirates following the 2009 season, but he was traded back to Boston in late April. He went 0-for-2 on Monday night before play was suspended.
