FOXBORO, Mass. — Training camp has finally arrived for the New England Patriots, which means it's time for NESN.com's third roster prediction of the offseason. Check out the first and second editions to see how the predictions have progressed.
We've spiced it up this time, including all 81 players who were on the roster as of Thursday morning and where they stand in relation to the bubble. Check back every Friday for an updated version of our roster predictions.
Defensive Linemen (7)
Vince Wilfork, Ty Warren, Mike Wright, Gerard Warren, Damione Lewis, Myron Pryor, Derrick Burgess
Note: This might be the most important month of Ron Brace's career.
Linebackers (8)
Jerod Mayo, Tully Banta-Cain, Brandon Spikes, Gary Guyton, Tyrone McKenzie, Jermaine Cunningham, Pierre Woods, Rob Ninkovich
Note: This unit has the most question marks on the team. It will be interesting to see the personnel groupings unfold throughout training camp.
Cornerbacks (6)
Leigh Bodden, Darius Butler, Jonathan Wilhite, Devin McCourty, Kyle Arrington, Terrence Wheatley
Note: Wheatley is added to this edition. He looked good in the spring, so he's got the inside track for now.
Safeties (4)
Brandon Meriweather, James Sanders, Patrick Chung, Brandon McGowan
Note: Chung wore the red non-contact jersey throughout organized team activities and minicamp, likely to protect himself from an apparent wrist injury. He should be able to shed that in time for training camp.
Offensive Line (9)
Matt Light, Dan Koppen, Stephen Neal, Nick Kaczur, Sebastian Vollmer, Dan Connolly, Mark LeVoir, Ted Larsen, Ryan Wendell
Note: Still looks like a good group here, with or without Logan Mankins. However, Mankins makes them one of the best lines in the league.
Quarterbacks (2)
Tom Brady, Brian Hoyer
Note: Don’t discount the Patriots picking up a veteran quarterback with the hopes of adding a little more depth.
Wide Receivers (7)
Randy Moss, Wes Welker, Julian Edelman, Torry Holt, Sam Aiken, Brandon Tate, Taylor Price
Note: Aiken is the biggest question mark in this group, but he was very well-respected as the special teams captain in 2009. It would be surprising if he got cut, but he's still not completely locked in.
Running backs (4)
Fred Taylor, Laurence Maroney, Sammy Morris, Kevin Faulk
Note: BenJarvus Green-Ellis misses the cut in this edition, but he's right on the fringe.
Tight ends (3)
Rob Gronkowski, Alge Crumpler, Aaron Hernandez
Note: Gronkowski and Hernandez heard an earful from the coaching staff during spring practices, so training camp will provide a good indication of how hard the rookies hit the books.
Kicker (1)
Stephen Gostkowski
Note: Nice and steady.
Punter (1)
Zoltan Mesko
Note: Mesko is an instant upgrade to last season's league-worst punting unit.
Long Snapper (1)
Jake Ingram
Note: Pretty big vote of confidence that the Patriots wouldn’t even bring in another long snapper to challenge Ingram, who had a flawless rookie season.
On the Bubble (10)
Linebacker Eric Alexander, defensive lineman Ron Brace, defensive end Brandon Deaderick, running back BenJarvus Green-Ellis, safety Bret Lockett, offensive lineman Rich Ohrnberger, wide receiver David Patten, wide receiver Matthew Slater, offensive lineman Thomas Welch, linebacker Thomas Williams
A Little Further Away (6)
Linebacker Marques Murrell, offensive lineman George Bussey, defensive lineman Adrian Grady, defensive lineman Darryl Richard, quarterback Zac Robinson, defensive tackle Kade Weston
Long Shots (11)
Safety Sergio Brown, running back Thomas Clayton, wide receiver Buddy Farnham, linebacker Dane Fletcher, wide receiver Darnell Jenkins, cornerback Terrence Johnson, defensive lineman Kyle Love, tight end Rob Myers, running back Chris Taylor, safety Ross Ventrone, offensive lineman John Wise
Holding Out
Left guard Logan Mankins
