A day after seeing star first baseman Kevin Youkilis go down with an ankle injury and his replacement struggle, the Red Sox have brought in some reinforcements.

The Sox have selected the contract of Ryan Shealy, 30, from Triple-A Pawtucket prior to Wednesday night's game at Tampa Bay, according to reports. Niuman Romero, who took over when Youkilis departed with a right ankle injury during Tuesday's 3-2 loss, will be sent back down.

Romero was 0-for-4 and left six men on base after taking over for Youkilis.

Shealy was released by the Rays on June 15 and signed by the Sox two days later. He was hitting .246 with two home runs in 18 games with the PawSox. A one-time highly regarded prospect in the Colorado Rockies' system, Shealy is a career .271 hitter with 19 homers and 94 RBIs in 164 major league games with Colorado and Kansas City.
