Angels pitcher Fernando Rodney created one heck of a quandary for Red Sox hurler and former Angels ace John Lackey.
The reliever struck Sox third baseman Adrian Beltre in the back with a 97 mph heater on a 1-0 count, just one batter after Rodney was taken deep by David Ortiz (the slugger’s second tater of the night).
Beltre glared back at Rodney after being hit, which prompted Halos backstop Mike Napoli and home plate ump Wally Bell to step in front of Beltre. Both benches were then warned by Bell.
The Sox bench, including manager Terry Francona, sure let Rodney hear it after the uncalled-for plunking. With Lackey toeing the slab Tuesday night, one has to wonder if the Angel of eight seasons goes after one of his former teammates in retaliation for Rodney’s plunking.
