Carlos Delgado hasn't swung a bat in professional baseball since May 2009. He's going to need a little time to rediscover his stroke.
The Red Sox' latest acquisition went 0-for-3 as the designated hitter for Triple-A Pawtucket on Monday night. He was substituted in the eighth inning by pinch hitter Ryan Shealy, who struck out looking.
Facing Kei Igawa of the Scranton/Wilkes-Barre Yankees, Delgado flew out in a two-pitch at-bat in the second inning, grounded out to third in a two-pitch at-bat in the fourth inning and struck out swinging in a four-pitch at-bat in the sixth.
He made good contact, though, according to the Providence Journal, which reports that Delgado's flyout reached the warning track and his groundout was a hard liner.
Rich Hill, who could log some innings for the big club in September, went five scoreless innings, allowing just two hits and one walk while striking out six. The PawSox couldn't come away with a victory, though, losing 2-1 on a two-run, walk-off home run by Jesus Montero.
