Red Sox outfielder Mike Cameron has been placed on the disabled list, manager Terry Francona announced before Monday night's game against the Indians. He will be replaced by Daniel Nava.
Cameron, 37, has played through injury for much of the season. He suffered from kidney stones in April and has since suffered lower abdominal pain that will require surgery in the offseason. In the extended absence of Jacoby Ellsbury, his presence has been vital for the Red Sox, but after a three-strikeout performance on Friday night (when he also dropped a catchable ball in left-center field), the pain may have finally caught up to him.
Nava, 27, famously hit the first major league pitch he saw over the right-field fence at Fenway Park for a grand slam on May 22. He played 29 games with the Red Sox, batting a respectable .286 with 10 doubles and 16 RBIs before being sent back to Triple-A Pawtucket.
Cameron is hitting .259 on the season, but he was 1-for-16 in his last four games.
