Mark Herzlich put on his pads and practiced on Tuesday — something he had not done since preparing for Boston College's game in the Music City Bowl against Vanderbilt 20 months ago.

Herzlich, who missed all of 2009 while recovering from Ewing's Sarcoma and suffered a stress fracture in his right foot earlier this year, may make his emotional return to action this Saturday in Boston College's opener against Weber State.

"We will still take it day by day,'' Herzlich told the Boston Globe. "If it was a big risk, I wouldn't be doing this, but I don't see much of a risk. So I'm going to keep going.''

BC coach Frank Spaziani expressed caution about the linebacker's return.

"We will take each day and evaluate things and see where we are,'' said Spaziani. "We're not going to be foolish. It will be up to him to see how he feels.''
