Jacoby Ellsbury will not resume any baseball-related activities until after the 2010 season comes to an end, Red Sox manager Terry Francona told reporters Friday night in Oakland.
Ellsbury was placed on the disabled list Aug. 14 for the third time this season after aggravating his fractured ribs in a collision in Texas. The timetable for his return was set at up to six weeks, but the chances he would return this year were considered slim.
The outfielder, who turns 27 on Saturday, was first hurt April 11 in Kansas City when he collided with third baseman Adrian Beltre. He returned for three games in May before being shut down until Aug. 4.
In his final active period last month, a nine-game stint, he stole five bases but hit just .118 (4-for-34). For the season, Ellsbury hit .192 with seven steals, five RBIs and 10 runs scored in just 18 games.
