In a development that should come as no surprise, Jets defensive end (and draft bust) Vernon Gholston told reporters Thursday that he, Braylon Edwards and D'Brickashaw Ferguson weren't thinking ahead before Edwards got behind the wheel drunk on Monday night.

Well, duh.

"When you talk about going out, you never have that mindset of drinking or what’s necessary [if you do drink]," Gholston said, according to the New York Post. "In those cases, you’re already out and things happen."

In the case of Edwards, the "things" that "happened" included the receiver blowing a .16 and getting busted for DWI. Edwards, though, was apparently willing to take a field sobriety test, which he said "they do in Michigan."

While such a claim from Edwards leads one to believe that this wasn't his first rodeo with the police, Gholston said Edwards didn't appear to be intoxicated.

"To my knowledge, no," Gholston said when asked if Edwards seemed to be unfit to drive.

Gholston said he made it home after Edwards' arrest in the fashion that all three players probably should have utilized in the first place: "I caught a cab," he said.

Gholston also told the Post that the "Player Protect" program, which is designed to drive home players in these exact situations, had only been introduced to them last week, so it wasn't on their minds.

"Yes, sir. I put it in my phone," Gholston said of the Player Protect phone number.
