The 46th Annual Head of the Charles Regatta a Huge Success

With the help of over 1,400 volunteers and regatta sponsors, the Head of the Charles exceeded expectations this year.

No matter the location, volunteers, rowers and spectators all agreed the event went off without a hitch. The weather was compatible throughout the weekend. Considering last year’s nor’easter, Sunday’s momentary shower was a mere blip during the 46th Annual Event.

“We’re pleased as punch about the weather this year,” HOCR executive director Fred Schoch told reporters. As they should be since last year it was snowing and rowers were at serious risk for hypothermia.

Day One had the best weather of the weekend, as the sun was shining without the expected wind. The day’s 30 races took place from 7:45 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.

Day Two of the Regatta was especially successful as 13 course records were set during just 25 races. Not to mention that this year’s Regatta featured a total of 9,001 rowers, almost 200 more than last year’s.

The HOCR committee put out a special thanks to their four major sponsors, who provided the funds to put on the historical event. The 2010 Regatta sponsors were Lincoln Automobiles, EMC Inc., Brooks Brothers and Delta Airlines. The addition of EMC Inc, the Hopkinton-based data storage company, allowed the HOCR to continue to expand this year.

“We were biting our nails,” Schoch told reporters. “We would have lost money. We were cutting everything in sight to pare costs. The economy was tough and sponsorship deals usually have a two- to three-year incubation period.”

If the 47th Head of the Charles Regatta continues to expand as well as the 46th, rowing fans from across the world have much to look forward to.
