Legendary comic book author Stan Lee is taking on the world’s coolest sport.

The 87-year-old Lee, who has co-created such superhero characters as Spider-Man, The Fantastic Four, X-Men, The Avengers, Iron Man, The Incredible Hulk and others, will team up with the National Hockey League and create 30 new comic book-like characters as part of The Guardian Project, mediaweek.com reports.

The goal of the project is to attact a new generation of hockey fans, and Guardian Media Entertainment, a new company, will oversee all aspects of the endeavor.

“I’ve always believed that every great plan starts with a great story,” Lee said. “In the creation of GME and its unique and unprecedented relationship with the NHL, I truly believe we have the perfect combination from which to launch 30 new superheroes and excite young fans around the globe.”

These superheroes will have their own special powers and represent every hockey team. They will be unveiled during the 2011 NHL All-Star Game in January.
