Parents of students at Lawrence Academy in Groton, Mass., are angry with a rival school for forfeiting a football game because Lawrence’s team is “too good.”

According to WPRI, Lawrence parents think St. George’s School in Middletown, R.I., is sending the wrong message by refusing to play the game.

“You’re telling the kids on the field, look, if you’re coming up in life against a situation that seems like it’s impossible to win, just give up,” Joel Kelley told WPRI.

While St. George administrators were concerned that their players might get injured, parents are more concerned with how it’s making the young athletes feel.

“It’s sort of defeating them before they even have a chance,” said Patsy Rosenberg, a parent of a Lawrence student.  “It’s sending them a message about what they think their abilities are.”

Last year, Lawrence Academy was criticized for running up the score against their opponents. So far this season Lawrence has beaten Milton Academy 36-14 and St. Mark’s 37-0.
