Patriots safety Patrick Chung blocked a punt and a field goal, in addition to recording an interception in the Patriots Monday Night blowout against the Miami Dolphins, so one would think he would be a lock for an NFL weekly award.
Think again.
A day before Chung and the Patriots battled on the national stage, the Jacksonville Jaguars were putting on a show of their own. Tied at 28 with the Indianapolis Colts with just six seconds remaining, Jaguars kicker Josh Scobee lined up for a 59-yard field goal. Scobee nailed it, sending a perfect boot through the uprights for a 31-28 victory over the disgruntled Colts.
While the race for AFC Special Teams Player of the Week was a close one between Scobee and Chung, the edge went to the Jags’ kicker, who recorded the longest field goal in Jacksonville franchise history. Scobee is now 2-for-2 when kicking 50-plus yard field goals in 2010 and Sunday’s 59-yard kick was the longest of his career.
Chung’s efforts led to three touchdowns in the second half for New England. BenJarvus Green-Ellis scored after Chung blocked the Dolphins’ punt at the 26-yard line, Kyle Arrington recorded a 35-yard return after the blocked field goal attempt, and Chung scored on his own 51-yard drive following his interception of Miami quarterback Chad Henne.
