WILMINGTON, Mass — With David Krejci sidelined with a concussion and Brian McGrattan assigned to Providence after clearing waivers, the Bruins found themselves without any extra healthy players on their roster.
That wouldn't be a problem if the remaining 20 players all stayed healthy. But before McGrattan had even officially cleared waivers, the injury bug struck again as forward Michael Ryder left practice early on Tuesday with an undisclosed injury.
Bruins coach Claude Julien stated after practice that Ryder was expected to play Wednesday in Pittsburgh, but the Bruins did recall Jamie Arniel from Providence later Wednesday on an emergency basis. Arniel will join the team to Pittsburgh for Wednesday's morning skate and be available for the game if needed.
"As of right now, as we speak, I don't see an issue," said Julien of Ryder's status. "That doesn't mean there won't be. But he went off because I asked him to, to play it safe."
This is the first NHL call-up for Arniel, 20, who is in his second full season in the AHL. In 12 games this year, he is second on the team in both goals and points with 6-3-9 totals and leads Providence with 44 shots on goal. He has been particularly hot of late with goals in each of the P-Bruins' last three games.
A fourth-round pick in 2008, Arniel is the nephew of former Bruins forward and current Columbus Blue Jackets head coach Scott Arniel, and finished last year with 12-16-28 totals in 67 games in Providence.
