John Henry and Damien Comolli stressed the notion of planning for the long term over spending for immediate results at Anfield in their remarks on Monday. Henry even strongly suggested that the team won’t be spending in January.
On Tuesday, Comolli dispelled that notion, saying that the club would certainly have the option of a making a major signing — provided it was a good deal.
“We have a pretty good idea of what we would like to do and we have identified targets,” Comolli said, according to Daily Mail. “If there’s a possibility of us getting a world-class player, we will have the backing.”
“John [Henry] and Tom [Werner] want to win — and you win with top players. If it can be done in January, great. If it can’t because we feel it is the wrong market or players are overpriced, then we will wait,” Comolli continued.
The new director of football strategy at Anfield went on to reiterate the long-term approach, but made clear that such doesn’t exclude January activity.
“I’m not going to say we won’t do anything in January because that is not the idea at the moment. … We will do what is right for the long term. What is right for the long term can be something we do in January,” he said.
