Just about everybody expects Derek Jeter to ultimately re-sign with the New York Yankees — no matter how severe the contract impasse between the two parties may be.
But if Jeter were to leave his pinstripes behind, the World Series champions may be the team most likely to acquire his services.
The Giants let Juan Uribe sign with Los Angeles on Monday, and fellow shortstop Edgar Renteria is mulling his options — including retirement. The Giants need a shortstop, and Jeter needs a team.
In fact, according to the Wall Street Journal, the Giants have contacted Casey Close, Jeter’s agent — who also represents Buster Posey.
Giants GM Brian Sabean has brought in aging talent before, and he was the Yankees vice president of player development when they drafted Jeter in 1992.
San Francisco is not the only option. Los Angeles, Anaheim, St. Louis, Baltimore and Minnesota have all also been mentioned, though it does seem highly unlikely that he ends up anywhere but the Bronx.
“There just doesn’t seem to be much out there for him besides the Yankees,” said a source close to the situation.
