When John Henry purchased Liverpool FC in October, Red Sox Nation cried foul, assuming the Red Sox ownership group wouldn’t have the money to land big-name acquisitions this offseason.

Now, a week after the Sox added both Adrian Gonzalez and Carl Crawford, it’s the Liverpool fan base that is worried.

“I wouldn’t know Carl Crawford from Cindy Crawford so it doesn’t mean anything to me,” Luke Smith, a 28-year-old graphic designer and member of a Liverpool fan group, told The Wall Street Journal. “But I’d be happy if they gave [Liverpool manager Roy] Hodgson $42 million to spend, never mind $142 million.”

Sox fans believe that because Henry plunked down $477 million on the northern England franchise that their beloved baseball club wouldn’t have the loot to add anyone new this offseason.

That’s just not how the business works, says Henry.

“People don’t have a clear understanding of Fenway Sports Group,” he wrote in an e-mail to the Journal. “So it’s understandable that they may believe that buying Liverpool Football Club deprives the Boston Red Sox of capital. But it just doesn’t work that way.”
