Peter Gammons: Red Sox, Mets Discussing Trade for Carlos Beltran With the price tag for free agent Carl Crawford reaching absurd levels in the wake of Jayson Werth's ridiculous megadeal, and with a wealth of lefties already in Boston's lineup, the Red Sox may be looking elsewhere to add to their outfield.

According to Peter Gammons, that "elsewhere" is Queens.

Gammons reported on MLB Network that the Sox "continue to talk to the Mets" about Carlos Beltran, as quoted by HardballTalk.com.

Beltran had a rather tumultuous 2010, beginning with knee surgery in January and getting complicated when the Mets said he did not have their permission to get surgery. The two sides stated their cases publicly, creating an ugly sideshow, and Beltran didn't play until July 15.

The switch hitter batted just .255 in his 64 games, his lowest average since 2000 with the Royals.

Still, the Red Sox may not be overly confident in Mike Cameron's ability to make it through the entire season healthy, and the 33-year-old Beltran may fit well to split time with the soon-to-be 38-year-old Cameron.

Gammons speculated that the Mets would be willing to pay up to $10 million of Beltran's $18.5 million salary but may want Daisuke Matsuzaka or Marco Scutaro in return. Gammons added that it's unlikely the Sox would give up either player.
