The Red Sox and Adrian Gonzalez still have work to do. According to the Mexican blog Puro Beisbol, Boston’s newly acquired first baseman denies that he has a seven-year extension in place with the team.

“Nothing about that is true,” said Gonzalez of multiple reports that have him signing an extension with the Red Sox for at least seven years and at least $154 million. “It’s false. I haven’t signed any contract.”

The word was that the Red Sox would announce the extension in April in order to avoid luxury tax issues. Gonzalez seems to think that there is much work to be done before anything is set in stone.

“We discussed the trade, but we didn’t reach any agreement, and we didn’t negotiate numbers,” he is quoted as telling Fernando Ballesteros in the blog. “The only thing I have for sure is the contract I had already signed with the Padres, and what I can tell you is that over the course of the season, we’re going to negotiate to reach an agreement.”

When asked to comment on his specific demands in terms of years and dollars, Gonzalez declined.

“Right now, I don’t know what to tell you because the team could use it to its advantage, so the day [the Red Sox] want to sit down and discuss my contract, we’ll happily do it, and that day, we’ll say what we want,” he said.
