A day in which Red Sox fans saw a potential trade for Adrian Gonzalez fall through may get a little worse with recent news in regards to a big-time free agent the team may have been in the running for.

According to MLB.com's Todd Zolecki, the Washington Nationals are closing in on a deal for free-agent outfielder Jayson Werth. Sports Illustrated's Jon Heyman reported via Twitter that Werth and the Nationals agreed on a seven-year deal and Fox's Ken Rosenthal also tweeted that the Nationals will have an announcement regarding the deal at 5 p.m. on Sunday.

Multiple reports have Werth getting $126 million over the course of the seven-year pact.

Werth's potential signing in D.C. is worse news for Phillies fans, of course, as they would lose quite a talent to a division rival.
